Nigeria’s D’Tigers have suffered a second consecutive defeat in the men’s basketball event at the Rio 2016 Olympics, losing 89-80 to Lithuania Tuesday night.
The Nigerian side, coming from a 94-66 loss to Argentina in their first game, were off to a bright start, showing signs of hunger and determination to beat Lithuania.
As a result, D’Tigers led by 41-36 points going into half-time after taking the lead in the first quarter.
But on resumption for the 3rd quarter, the Nigerians went relaxed and allowed Lithuania to gain possession and also bounce back.
Mantas Kalnietis and Jonas Maciulis led with 21 points each for Lithuania, and the impact of their Centre Jonas Valanciunas in the 3rd quarter really changed the game for them, making 10 points and 5 rebounds with 4 of those being defensive rebounds.
For the Nigerian side, Ike Diogu led by example, making 19 points and 7 rebounds, followed by Michael Umeh who contributed 17 points, 2 rebounds and 4 assists.
Though it was an improvement from the D’Tigers coming from their first game, a daunting task against Spain in their next game will no doubt put them to test.
