Purity Akuh, Head Coach of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), on Monday in Akure called for early preparation ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in Japan.
Akuh made the call while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the unimpressive performance of the country’s contingent to the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The national coach said the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports should immediately commence preparations ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.
Akuh noted that the country’s wrestlers were unlucky with the pairing at the Games.
“Odunayo Adekuoroye is number nine in the world, but when the pairing was done at Rio, she was seeded with the world number one, Sofia Mattson of Sweden.
“However, this is part of the preparations I am talking about. We had tried to arrange a match with the world number one female wrestler, but we could not do this before the Olympics.
“We apologise for not coming back home with a medal, but there is still hope, because most of our wrestlers are still young,” he said.
Blessing Oborodudu, who is in the 69kg weight class, lost 1-3 to Soronzombold Battesetseg of Mongolia.
Adekuoroye lost 0-8 to Mattson in the 63kg weight class.
Team Nigeria returned home with only the bronze medal won by the football team.
