Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr is hopeful Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel gets back to full fitness following his return to England.

Mikel was unveiled by Championship side Middlesbrough after completed a free transfer on Wednesday.

The former Chelsea midfielder has not played international football since Nigeria’s ouster from the Russia 2018 World Cup, a situation that is worrisome for Rohr.

But the coach, in an interview with Bounce News, is happy Mikel has joined a new club, with the hope that he will get regular playing time.

“We are very happy that our captain is now in a good club and I hope he plays very often and finds his rhythm again.

“We will watch him and stay in contact with all our players and with him also. He has to be very fit, and I think he will work on it.

“If he’s playing well in the club like other players, he has a chance to come back and we will be glad to see him back.

“And it will be wonderful for Mikel to come and win the AFCON with Nigeria.”
